Over the past several weeks, local radio station 94.3 WYBC has hosted “Cool Breeze Music in the Parks” sponsored by Comcast. On this occasion, the event took place in the West River Memorial Park section of the city.

Many of the previous events have carried a similar theme and have concluded with a local band igniting the crowd to get up and dance. While that was again the case, this “party” in particular carried another tone.

Before the event kicked off, local children of all ages were honored in pageant style fashion as “Kings and Queens of the Elm City.” The winners and runners up were greeted by cheers from the crowd in what could best be described as a city wide Ms. America contest. DJ Diamond D from WYBC took a break from his usual oldies set and played a popular song for the kid’s called “Watch Me Whip/Nae Nae.” Moreover, it is safe to say the honorees drew the biggest applause for their dance skills, something this writer has stayed away from.

On the banks of the river spectators had a chance to eat from a lining of food trucks. One of those food trucks called “Lunch Box 23” served up gourmet sliders that looked to be out of a five star restaurant. If something sweet was calling your name, another food truck was selling Italian ices of all flavors. In addition, kettle corn, hot dogs, and Georgia hots were all available to cover virtually anyone’s appetite.

In the finale, the Gary Glover band featuring Wallace Grey brought the crowd to its feet as if they were playing in a full stadium. The band used terrific play on the saxophone and the base to cover classic hits such as “Real Love” by Mary J Blige. Vocally, Wallace Grey sparked many in the crowd to dance in a terrific performance aided by the band’s namesake on the drums. All in all, not bad times for a free show for the community to enjoy in.

In case you missed this fantastic event, one more will take place on August 12th at the Roberto Clemente Field in New Haven. If this most recent one is any indication of the fun of the evening, the finale of his four part series is one not anyone should miss.
